The NHL has fined Islanders forward Mathew Barzal $5,000, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for high-sticking Hurricanes defenseman Tony DeAngelo at 2:59 of the second period of Saturday night's 4-3 overtime loss.
Islanders Lose 4-3 OT to Hurricanes
The New York Islanders blew a 3-0 lead to the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night, falling 4-3 in overtime.
To add insult to injury, the NHL has fined Islanders forward Mathew Barzal $5,000, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for high-sticking Hurricanes defenseman Tony DeAngelo at 2:59 of the second period.
Barzal was given a two-minute minor on the play.
This is the fourth time Barzal has been fined:
- Fined $2,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct against Toront's Mitch Marner (grabbing him from the bench) in April of 2022
- Fined $2,000 for diving/embellishment in April 2021 against Washington
- Fined $5,000 in June of 2021 for cross-checking Tampa's Jan Rutta
The Islanders and Tony DeAngelo already have bad blood from his time with the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers.
Last season, DeAngelo picked a fight with Oliver Wahlstrom, and that didn’t end too well for the south-Jersey native:
The money from Barzal goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
