The Montreal Canadiens are asking for a first-round pick for defenseman David Savard. Could the New York Islanders offer something close and get their Scott Mayfield replacement?
The New York Islanders are without defenseman Scott Mayfield for the foreseeable future after he was placed on long-term injured reserve on Tuesday.
With Robert Bortuzzo close to returning, Sebastian Aho playing well alongside Mike Reilly, and Samuel Bolduc back from his conditioning stint, the need to bring in a blue liner at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline isn't incredibly high.
But, if the Islanders, who have $1.58 million in cap space after Bortuzzo gets activated, want to find more of a Mayfield replacement, look no further than Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard.
The 33-year-old defender has five goals and 10 assists in 41 games. He regularly gives up his body, with 115 blocks on the season, and is playing on Montreal's top penalty-kill unit.

Sportsnet's Eric Engels shared live on their Trade Deadline show Friday morning that Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes is looking for a first-round pick for Savard.
At $3.5 million annually over the next two seasons, with 50 percent retention ($1.75 M cap hit this season), this could be a solid addition for the Islanders now and to have next season, but would Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello use his first-round pick on an aging veteran?
We know that's Hughes's desire, but would a forward like Oliver Wahlstrom and their second-round pick in 2024 be equivalent to a first?
Lamoriello shared Tuesday morning that the organization hasn't given up on the 23-year-old forward. The forward has struggled with confidence after working his way back from an ACL injury and garnering limited ice time.
Wahlstrom, the Islanders' 11th overall pick in 2018, is a pending restricted free agent who has the potential to be a top-six forward in the NHL, just not with the Islanders, given their roster.
The Habs could provide Wahlstrom the opportunity that the island can't and Savard could be a savior to the league's worst shorthanded unit.
The 2024 NHL Trade Deadline is today at 3 PM ET.
