Former Islanders head coach Barry Trotz came and the Nashville Predators came in clutch on Saturday to help Patrick Roy’s squad gain ground.

The New York Islanders put the pedal to the metal to snap their six-game skid on Saturday, defeating the Winnipeg Jets 6-3 on Saturday night.

That put Patrick Roy’s posse three points back of the Detroit Red Wings for the second wild-card spot with 12 games to go and a game in hand.

Despite the Islanders getting a much needed win, that didn’t guarantee that they’d make up ground.

The Islanders needed their former coach Barry Trotz and his Nashville Predators team to beat the Red Wings in regulation.

It was a game that looked to be heading to overtime, but Filip Forsberg came up clutch for the Predators and Islanders, scoring at 14:46 of the third period in a 1-0 win.

Because of this result, the Islanders can wake up Monday morning a point out of a wild card spot if they beat the New Jersey Devils today at 5 PM and if the Washington Capitals don’t win agains the Jets at 12:30.
