On the latest Rosner Wrap, Stefen Rosner dives into the latest from the day that was. The Florida Panthers shut out the Islanders' arch-rival New York Rangers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, while Sheldon Keefe will be named the next head coach of the New Jersey Devils. All that and more!
Good morning and happy Thursday.
New York Islanders fans probably woke up with a huge smile on their faces as the New York Rangers were shutout 3-0 by the Flordia Panthers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Wednesday night.
Matthew Tkachuk opened up the scoring on a goal that Igor Shesterkin would surely like back:
Then, after the Rangers got a second life following a disallowed goal for goalie interference, Shesterkin made a mistake late in the third period -- playing the puck when Alexis Lafreinier could easily have scooped it up, leading to a disastrous goal against:
The Panthers would add an empty-net goal courtesy of Sam Bennett, and that was all she wrote in Game 1.
The Rangers had no answer for the Panthers' forecheck and aggressiveness, with many fans calling for Matt Rempe to play in Game 2 to bring that physical presence.
People forget that Rempe will play for about five minutes, which will only hurt the Rangers since their bench will be shortened immediately.
Also, will Rempe be able to be effective when he is on the ice?
If he takes a penalty in those five minutes of ice time, that's a double-whammy for the Blue Shirts.
It was good to see Filip Chytil play in this game, but that shot he took in garbage time by former Rangers defenseman Niko Mikkola was uncalled for.
But as Boston Bruins' captain Brad Marchand said during their series against Florida, the goal is to hurt as many people on the other team as possible -- that's just the nature of the beast.
Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette said Chytil was good.
Game 2 will be on Friday night at 8 PM ET on ESPN/ESPN+.
Now, we gear up for Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars.
This one should be a doozy, and a battle of depth, with the advantage going to Dallas.
Connor McDavid and the Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks, who were without their leading scorer Brock Boeser due to a blood clot, 3-2 in Game 7 to advance, while Wyatt Johnson and the Stars sent the Colorado Avalanche home in Game 6 after Matt Duchene scored at the glove-side post in double overtime to haunt his former team.
Puck drop for Game 1 is scheduled for 8:30 PM ET on TNT and their family of networks.
We had two head coaching decisions made on Wednesday, both having connections to the Islanders, in one way or another.
Once Sheldon Keefe was shown the door after the Toronto Maple Leafs fell to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the First Round, everyone knew that it wouldn't take long for him to find a new home. He joins the New Jersey Devils, reportedly on a four-year deal:
ESPN's Kevin Weekes reported that the Los Angeles Kings have removed the interim tag from former Islanders assistant coach Jim Hiller after taking over following Todd McLellan's firing this past season.
The official announcement from the team is expected to come at some point today.
A few Islanders chimed in on what Hiller meant to them:
On Wednesday morning, Islanders pending unrestricted free agent forward Matt Martin hopped on the Boomer & Gio show on Wednesday morning and was asked about what he would do if the New York Rangers called him this summer:
