The Islanders own the worst penalty kill in the league.

The New York Islanders currently own the worst special teams in the NHL. Both the power play (12.2%) and penalty kill (64.7%) are ranked 32nd.

However, the Islanders have shown to be the most disciplined team in the NHL, amassing the least penalty minutes to this point of the season:

The Islanders have accumulated 165 penalty minutes, one of two teams with fewer than 200. The Vegas Golden Knights (79%) are the second-lowest team.

Vegas and New York have a sizeable gap over the rest of the league.

The Islanders' problem is that when they go to the box, they have extreme trouble keeping the puck out of their net.

It shows where the Islanders could be with just average special teams.

Penalty minutes are mostly dispersed throughout the Isles roster, with every regular besides Anthony Duclair (out since Oct. 20) having at least two PIM.

The team leader is rookie forward Maxim Tsyplakov, with 22.

Defenseman Scott Mayfield is right behind him with 21 minutes.

Defenseman Alexander Romanov has 14,  while forwards Anders Lee (12), Kyle Palmieri (10), and Pierre Engvall (10) round out the Islanders with double-digit penalty minutes.

The Islanders must remain disciplined to sustain their success throughout the rest of this season. If the penalty kill improves, this stat will greatly boost the Islanders.
