The Islanders lost their second straight preseason game, this time by way of the shutout.

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Marcus Hogberg put on a masterclass between the pipes, but the New York Islanders failed to beat Philadelphia Flyers goalie Sam Ersson in a 2-0 shutout loss on Thursday.

Hogberg stopped 24 of 25 in the loss, while Ersson stopped all 34 shots that came his way.

    Here's how it happened:

The game started with Simon Holmstrom flying up the ice on a 2-on-1 rush with Brock Nelson but he couldn't connect on the pass.

While Flyers netminder Sam Ersson was strong, stopping all 12 that came his way, Hogberg stole the show, stopping all 15 shots he saw, including a few one-timers and in-tight deflections, while also controlling his rebounds.

Maxim Tsyplakov, who was skating in his second game, doesn't seemed fazed by anything, trusting his skills and IQ to slow the game down and make simple, but correct plays.

Hogberg continued to steal the show in the second period, stoning Flyers' one-time chances left and right.

The Flyers had a strong chance to take the lead in the second half of the middle frame, as it looked like Tippett had a tap-in at the back post but prospect Calle Odelius intercepted the pass.

The Islanders had chances of their own, but Ersson, whose rebound control was a bit questionable, used the scramble method to keep the pucks out.

At 4:34 of the third period, the Flyers took a 1-0 lead after Cam York's shot missed the net but bounced right off the end boards and onto the stick of veteran Erik Johnson.

Rookie phenom Matvei Mitchkov earned the secondary assist:

Mitchkov added an empty-net goal with 1:03 to play to make it a 2-0 game.

The Islanders went 0-for-2 on the power play and despite having chances, they failed to bury.

UP NEXT: It's a quick turnaround for New York, as they host the New Jersey Devils on Friday night at 7 PM.
