With the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) set to begin play on Jan. 1, the New York Islanders will play a major role in the league’s inaugural season.

UBS Arena will host the New York club for four games in their 24-game campaign.

The action begins on Jan. 10 when they host the Montreal club in Elmont, with puck drop at 7:00 p.m. Montreal will return to UBS for a game on Feb. 21, with Minnesota and Boston visiting on Mar. 3 and 25, respectively.

Most of the remaining home games for Team New York will have the Islanders’ fingerprints on it, but that’s where the Islanders’ AHL affiliate comes in.

Team New York will play across the Sound at Total Mortgage Arena, home of the Bridgeport Islanders, with three home games at other venues yet to be announced.

The Islanders aren’t the only NHL team pitching in; the Minnesota Wild will loan Xcel Energy Center to their PWHL club for most of their home games as well. The league’s “original six” locations also include Ottawa and Toronto.

The names of the six PWHL clubs have yet to be formally released, but reports from Clark Rasmussen of DetroitHockey.net state the league has filed trademarks for their six-team names. The team will likely be named the New York Sound, but the league has not confirmed when branding will be released:

  • BOSTON WICKED
  • MINNESOTA SUPERIOR
  • MONTREAL ECHO
  • NEW YORK SOUND
  • OTTAWA ALERT
  • TORONTO TORCH

Regardless of identity, New York’s season begins on the road in Toronto on New Year’s Day against Toronto at Mattamy Athletic Center. Toronto will take part in New York’s first home game in Bridgeport on Jan. 5.
