Scott Mayfield's season is officially over.

EAST MEADOW, NY -- New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield hasn't played since Jan. 22 due to a lower-body injury that's plagued him for most of the season.

Ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello stated that Mayfield would be shut down for four to six weeks before a decision regarding surgery was made.

On Tuesday morning, the Islanders announced that Mayfield had successfully undergone surgery and would miss the rest of the season.

The positive news is that his rehab shouldn't impact his offseason workout regiment, which means he should be ready to go for training camp ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Mayfield suffered a lower body in game one of the regular season after he blocked a Rasmus Dahlin shot off the left ankle.

He missed seven games with that injury before missing another 13, playing his final game of the season on Feb. 22 against the St. Louis Blues.

"We're going to shut it down right now until he gets completely healthy," Lamoriello said ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. He's been banged up, on and off with it, and it's come to the point where we have to shut it down."

Mayfield's first year of a seven-year extension worth $24.5 million ($3.5 M AAV) didn't go his or the Islanders' way, but the hope is that his struggles and health will improve for next season.

The 31-year-old had no goals and five assists, with 106 blocks and 70 assists in 41 games, averaging 18:46 per game.
