The New Jersey Devils fired head coach Lindy Ruff on Monday, and a former New York Islanders player will take the reins.
Travis Green, a 14-year NHL veteran and Islander for six years, assumes the position on an interim tag.
Green was a part of the Islanders' 1993 run to the Prince of Wales Conference Finals, helping the team knock off the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. In 388 games with the club, he owns 92 goals and 145 assists, 237 points, before being shipped off to the Anaheim Ducks in a six-player trade.
Across his 970 game career, he totaled 193 goals and 262 assists, 455 points, between the Islanders, Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Phoenix Coyotes and Boston Bruins.
After retiring following the 2007-08 season, which he spent in Switzerland, Green went into coaching.
Starting as an assistant with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks assistant in 2009-10, he worked his way up, eventually being named the head coach of the AHL's Utica Comets in 2013.
He spent four seasons as their head coach before getting his first NHL head coaching gig with the Vancouver Canucks, from 2017-2022, with a record of 133-147-34.
After not being behind the bench for the 2022-23 season, the New Jersey Devils hired him as an assistant coach to Ruff for this season.
Now, he's being tasked with saving the Devils season, as they sit eight points out of a wild-card spot.
