Dobson outpacing Potvin? In this economy?
MONTREAL -- New York Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson has been on a tear. Over his last four games, he’s tallied eight assists, including a three-helper night against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
While it didn’t go the Islanders’ way, it put him into the Islanders’ record book, per MSG’s Eric Hornick.
Hornick shared that with 45 assists in 48 games, Dobson became the fourth Islanders’ skater to reach the mark that quickly; the only three forwards that did it were Clark Gillies, Mike Bossy, and Bryan Trottier, who did it five times.
In addition, Dobson finished his second stretch of eight assists in four games this season, last playing at that level in December. He is the first blueliner to perform to that level twice in a season since Denis Potvin in 1975-76.
Dobson recorded his 40th assist of the season against the Stars on Sunday, becoming the 11th player in franchise history to accomplish the feat and the first since Mark Streit in 2011-12.
With his performance throughout the week, 50 assists are on the horizon, a mark only three defensemen have done with the team.
The young defenseman sits just two assists back of Vancouver Canucks' Quinn Hughes, who leads NHL defensemen with 47, and just seven back of Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan Mackinnon, who leads the entire NHL with 52.
What a season it's been for Dobson.
