New York Islanders young defenseman Noah Dobson is coming off a breakout season. The 24-year-old bounced back from a tougher 2022-23 campaign and returned to top offensive form from a season prior.
In 2023-24, Dobson combined his strong offensive ability with solid —better — defensive play, leading to league-wide recognition for the Prince Edward Island native.
On Wednesday, Dobson was named to NHL Network's annual "Top Defenseman Right Now" list, coming in at No. 15.
The former 12th overall pick is in great company.
Last season, Dobson recorded 10 goals with 60 assists for 70 points in 79 games.
He was producing at a point-per-game pace until fatigue started to catch up to him in late March and early April. He played big minutes — skating on his off-wing at times — when Adam Pelech, Sebastian Aho, and Scott Mayfield went down with injuries.
The 2024-25 season is the final year of Dobson's three-year bridge contract, which he signed ahead of the 2021-22 season.
He will be a restricted free agent and could demand top dollar from the Islanders if he has another strong season.
Dobson was just behind two Metropolitan Division counterparts on the list, with Jaccob Slavin and Zach Werenski of the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets rounding out the 13 and 14 spots, respectively.
Two tri-state rivals were also on the list as well, with New York Rangers 2020-21 Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox at No. 8 and New Jersey Devils Dougie Hamilton at No. 19.
Former Islanders defenseman and 2022 Stanley Cup Champion Devon Toews came in at No. 10

No Islanders skaters made the top 20 centers or wingers list at NHL Network.
However, Ilya Sorokin placed fifth on their "Top Ten Goaltenders Right Now" list:
Dobson's offensive output is so important for the Islanders. Still, for New York to achieve the ultimate goal, they will need him to continue making significant strides in his defensive game.
