EAST MEADOW, NY -- The New York Islanders were hoping that forward Anthony Duclair could rediscover his game after the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off Break.
The 29-year-old, who sustained a groin injury just five games into the season, has struggled to bring the speed that makes him effective since returning way back in late December.
Despite the struggles, even healthy-scratching him, head coach Patrick Roy kept believing in his former junior player.
And since the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, Duclair has looked much better. He's flying up the ice and making stronger players and decisions.
He has a goal -- he should have two but one was overturned for goaltender interference -- but more importantly, he just looks more confident out there.
"I was very happy with him," Roy said. "I'm happy with his game. I feel like he's starting to be more dangerous offensively. But what I like is when the play is dying, he's no longer puck watching, as much. He's moving his feet.
"And I know when he starts doing this, that's his game. Instead of looking, now he's doing both at the same time. So, I know his game is coming."
With Brock Nelson on the Colorado Avalanche now, the Islanders need a collective effort to help fill the offensive hole.
Duclair, who signed a four-year deal this summer worth $3.5 million annually, has to be one of the players that comes through if New York is going to make the playoffs.
It will be a challenging task, currently five points back of a wild-card spot with the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers kicking off a six-of-seven stretch on home ice.
