NHL insider Jeff Marek and way-too-early projected No. 1 pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, Landon DuPont, each believe Matthew Schaefer will go first overall to the New York Islanders in the upcoming draft:

DuPont, a defenseman who just scored 60 points (17 goals, 43 assists) in 64 games with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL in his age-15 season, went on to say Schaefer is a "generational" talent, citing his ability and maturity as a can't-miss prospect.

Following the combine, it has become increasingly likely the Islanders will select Schaefer with the No. 1 pick on June 27.
