Although the New York Islanders came away victorious Tuesday night in a 7-2 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs, they did lose forward Brock Nelson.
With 1:12 to go in the first period, Nelson left the ice and did not return following a questionable hit from behind by Toronto Maple Leafs forward Noel Acciari.
The play looked like an illegal hit from behind in real-time, with Nelson’s no. 29 facing Acciari.
But as we slow the play down, Nelson does change his direction, and it appeared that Acciari had already committed to the hit.
It was still a dangerous hit.
Acciari was not penalized on the play but did drop the gloves with Islanders forward Matt Martin in the third period, a fight that the officials broke up rather quickly.
The Hockey News has learned that the NHL’s Department of Player Safety will not be dishing out a fine or a suspension for the hit.
Islanders head coach Lane Lambert did not have an update on Nelson’s status following the game.
New York is back on the practice ice Thursday morning, so we shall see if Nelson skates. If not, Lambert will likely provide us with an update.
