Matias Maccelli and Cal Ritchie join Mathew Barzal on the shelf, leaving the shorthanded Islanders to lean on emergency recalls as they await official recovery timelines.

In Saturday's 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New York Islanders lost both Matias Maccelli and Cal Ritchie to lower-body injuries in the first period.

Both are going to be out this week, at the minimum.

"I think they've got doctor's appointments this afternoon. What I can tell you is they're not going to play this week," Islanders head coach Pete DeBoer said. "I don't have a prognosis yet on how long after this week, that'll be."

Maccelli, 26, started the season on fire for the Islanders, posting two goals and six points through seven games.

Maccelli suffered a lower-body injury in the first period and did not return in his eighth game of the year.

Ritchie suffered the injury on his first shift of the night, and did not return.

The play itself looks like nothing, but those are often the most serious injuries in sports, as even a minor issue can quickly become something more serious.

Over eight games, Ritchie had one goal and one assist, but looked to be turning the corner after a slower-than-expected start.

In the interim, Kyle MacLean will step into the lineup, while the team has emergency recalled Mitchell Chaffee from the Hamilton Hammers.

Mathew Barzal continues to inch closer to a return, though one is not imminent.
