EAST MEADOW, NY -- The New York Islanders welcome star forward Mathew Barzal back to the ice sheet at Northwell Ice Center on Thursday morning ahead of their game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The 27-year-old forward has been away from the team since suffering an upper-body injury against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 30.

With one game left on their mini two-game road trip, Barzal was sent back to Long Island to be further evaluated by team doctors.

The result was a long-term absence, landing on long-term injured reserve, as he'll miss his 21st game on Thursday night.

In his absence, the Islanders have gone 8-7-5 to stay in the playoff race and could use him back as soon as he is ready to return.
