EAST MEADOW, NY -- New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal (two goals, five assists) was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week for the week of Nov. 27.

He is the first Islander to earn the recognition this season.

Despite missing the final game of the team's three-game road trip due to illness, Barzal had a strong showing in the two games he played.

The 26-year-old had a goal and two assists against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday in a 5-4 loss before a one-goal, three-assist showing against the Carolina Hurricanes in a 4-3 overtime win on Thursday, tallying the game-winning dagger:

For Barzal, it's the fourth time in his career that he's been named one of the league's Three Stars of the Week. The last time he received the honor was in March 2021, when he tallied three goals and seven points in three games.

The previous instances occurred in Dec. of 2017 when he tallied his first career hat trick against the Winnipeg Jets, and in Dec. of 2018, when he scored five goals and an assist, including three goals against former captain John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In both cases, he was named the NHL's Second Star.

Barzal is the first Islander to receive the honor since Ilya Sorokin was named the league's Third Star of the Week in Nov. of 2022. He's the first skater since Anders Lee took the third spot in March of 2022.
