It's always special to face the team you grew up cheering for.
Matt Coronato, 22, is set to do that on Tuesday night when he and the Calgary Flames play host to the New York Islanders.
Coronato is from Greenlawn in Suffolk County on Long Island.
In 2017-18, Coronato played for the Long Island Gulls 16U AAA team, scoring 19 goals with 24 assists for 43 points in 22 games, skating for St. Anthony High School as well.
In 2018-19, he played for Salisbury School, a prep school in Connecticut, scoring 15 goals with 17 assists for 32 points in 30 games. He also played for the Yale Jr. Bulldogs, recording four goals and four assists in eight games.
After just one year of prep school, Coronato headed to the USHL, spending three years with the Chicago Steel, recording 161 points (84 goals, 78 assists).
The Flames drafted him 13th overall in 2021 after he scored 48 goals with 37 assists for 85 points in 51 games with Chicago.
Following his junior career, Coronato played two seasons at Harvard University, recording 72 points (38 goals, 34 assists) in 68 games.
Coronato made the U-20 USA World Junior Championships team in 2021, scoring four goals with three assists for seven points in five games.
He made his NHL debut in 2023, playing the Flames' final game of the season. A year ago, he split time between the NHL and AHL, scoring three goals and six assists for nine points in 34 NHL games.
Coronato's development in the AHL with the Calgary Wranglers was successful. He scored 15 goals and 27 assists for 42 points in 41 games.
In 13 games this season with the Flames, the Long Island native has five goals and two assists for seven points. He also has a much improved plus-seven rating.
Growing up and watching the Islanders, Coronato's favorite player was actually a defenseman. It was Nick Leddy, who played for the Islanders from 2014-2021, the year Coronato was drafted:
Coronato will be ready for the occasion. After the morning skate, he told reporters in Calgary that this was special for him.
The Flames will visit UBS Arena on March 22 to take on the Islanders, so Coronato will have to wait a little bit longer for his first NHL game on the Island.
The Islanders come into Tuesday with their five-game point streak snapped by the Seattle Kraken after a 3-1 loss on Saturday. Calgary is coming off a 2-0 shutout win over the Nashville Predators on Friday.
