Islanders wearing white at home? In this economy?

Islanders wearing white at home? In this economy?

EAST MEADOW, NY -- The New York Islanders will go back to the old days and wear white at home in their final meeting with the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Carolina brought their alternate black jerseys with them on their three-game road trip, starting on Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Toronto wore their white St. Pats uniforms, as is tradition with St. Patrick’s Day, meaning Carolina needed a colored uniform.

With Carolina wearing black, the Islanders will wear white at UBS Arena for the second time this season.

They last wore those jerseys against the Detroit Red Wings in October; the Red Wings only brought the red jerseys on the road, with the Boston Bruins wearing their white centennial alternates in the only other game of their road trip.

White jerseys at home have become a rarity in the NHL. Since 2003, the NHL has mandated teams wear colored jerseys at home with road teams wearing white. However, teams are allowed to wear the opposite jerseys on a single-game basis, such as alumni or number retirement nights.

The Islanders went to that well twice in 2020 when they retired the numbers of John Tonelli and Butch Goring.

The Islanders and Hurricanes face off at UBS Arena at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
