Matt Rempe is expected to face no discipline for his hit on Nick Blankenburg that took place during the New York Rangers’ Sunday night game against the Nashville Predators.
Rempe, leading with his elbow, came in and hit Blankenburg, which resulted in a two-minute penalty for elbowing and a fight with Andreas Englund.
With Rempe getting suspended for eight games just a couple of months ago for a hit on Miro Heiskanen where his elbow placement was an issue, there was a fear that the enforcer could receive yet another harsh punishment.
When Rempe returned from his eight-game suspension he made clear that he was a “marked man” and he had to be more careful moving forward.
The NHL Department Player of Safety reviewed Rempe’s hit on Blankenburg and decided there will be no discipline.
Peter Laviolette came to the 22-year-old’s defense when asked about the most recent incident.
“Remps is just such a big man,” Laviolette said. When he hits, he’s just higher than everybody else. I don’t think he hit him, I think he maybe grazed him a little bit. I think it was more of a miss. That’s his game, as well. He’s got to do it within the rules, but we also need him forechecking.”
Rempe has already been suspended twice in his career, but got off scot-free this time around.
