Rangers Gave Nicolas Aube-Kubel A Chance Due To ‘Expereince’
Nicolas Aube-Kubel made his New York Rangers debut on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Kings.  The Rangers acquired him from the Buffalo Sabres just hours before the NHL Trade Deadline on Mar. 7.  When Aube-Kubel was acquired, it was believed that he could be a factor as a depth piece down the stretch. With Sam Carrick out of the lineup on Tuesday night for personal reasons, Peter Laviolette decided to give the 28-year-old a chance due to his experience according to Larry Brooks of The New York Post.  Laviolette also coached Aube-Kubel with the Washington Capitals, so he's familiar with his game. “He brings certain elements on a certain line,” Laviolette said of Aube-Kubel, via Brooks. “He’s a straight-line player. He’s physical. He can score a goal and he could shoot a puck. Heavy, strong, and good when he was with us in Washington for a little bit.” Aube-Kubel took 10 total shifts while recording 5:21 minutes in the Rangers’ 3-1 loss to the Kings.  It’s unclear if the Rangers will send Aube-Kubel back down to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League once Carrick returns to the team.

The Rangers Must Do What's Best For Brett Berard's Development
It might be best for the New York Rangers to send Brett Berard back down to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League at this point.  Berard has been scratched out of the Rangers’ lineup over the past two games and even when he does play, his role is limited to just fourth line minutes.  While Berard has shown flashes of promise through his first stint where he played 19 games and since getting called up again, the opportunity and trust from Peter Laviolette don’t seem to be there right now.  With Sam Carrick out for personal reasons on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Kings, Laviolette elected to replace him with Nicolas Aube-Kubel instead of Berard.  Understandably, the Rangers are in the middle of an intense battle for the playoffs and Laviolette wants to put out the best possible lineup in his eyes.  However, it’s unacceptable to have this talented 22-year-old watching games from the press box when he could be getting valuable experience with the Wolf Pack.  For the sake of Berard’s development, the Rangers should send him back down to the AHL, which will allow the young forward to play an expanded role, which will only help him grow as a player. Given how much progress he’s already made, Berard has a legitimate chance to not only make the Rangers’ roster next season, but also slot into a prominent spot.  In 28 games with the Rangers this season, Berard has recorded four goals, four assists and eight points while averaging 10:41 minutes.

Jacob Trouba's Rocky Divorce With Rangers And More Blueshirts Thoughts
    1. Once upon a time the Rangers had a captain. His name was Jacob Trouba. He hit foes hard; provided leadership and talked to the media post-game candidly and realistically.  2. The good news is that Jake The Rake is alive and well. The bad news is that he was kicked off the Rangers by GM Chris Drury. On Friday night he'll meet his former mates in Anaheim. 3. What we don't know – and won't know until Friday night – is whether Jake will go head-hunting. Surely there must be Blueshirts who were not his buddies in the fractured dressing room. (Good Health Note: Keep your head up, Mika!) 4. Compounding his club's problems, Peter Laviolette never got around to naming a new captain. Conceivably, he never will. Which means that this team essentially is leaderless. 5. Quick Quiz: What's both amazing and depressing about the Rangers at the same time? Answer: That Mika Zibanejad is quoted after every game, as if he's the captain. Happens all the time. 6. The amazing part is that the mainstream – now just a creek – media can't find someone better than Z. The depressing thing is that  Z has become a talking cliche! 7. Matt Rempe's magic has evolved into deep purple platitudes. The Hockey News columnist Ken Campbell's shots at Un-marvelous Matt are tougher than Tanner Jeanot's KO of Rempe last night. 8. "The Kid is a danger to himself (when he fights) and others when he hits," wrote Campbell. "He can't fight, can't hit and can't play." 9. Speaking of critics, Blue Collar Blueshirts' publisher Sean McCaffrey offered these descriptions of his favorite  team: A. Overpaid country-clubbers; B. They don't show up!; C. They're not inspired. D. In the third period, they were lifeless. 10. You have to believe that there's something seriously wrong with the Blueshirts when MSG voices Sam Rosen and Joe Micheletti criticize the team.  11. A few games ago, Slingin' Sam uttered these priceless words: "The power play stinks." It was not odorless last night in L.A. nor for the past dozen or so games. 12. Rosen's imminent retirement leaves the door open – not very wide, if open at all – for a replacement. No question but it has to be the best there is, Kenny Albert. 13. The next question surrounds Sam's sidekick Joe Micheletti and whether he continues in the analyst role, or simply follows Sam into retirement. 14. Should Kenny need a replacement for an IF-exiting Joe, the obvious choice would be super-competent and ever-candid Dave Maloney. 15. And if Dave moves up, who fills that opening? A wise longshot would be Hockey News' whiz writer Stefen (Rapid) Rosner who hugely impressed listeners with his tv analysis during the double-Israeli game at UBS. Rosner has all the goods. All he needs now is an MSG audition invite.

A Measure Of The Blueshirts: Play A Good Team And Wind Up Bad
The Rangers went west hoping to land on the sunny side of the street but leave today for Anaheim, back in the shade. All you need to know about the 3-1 loss to L.A. is from the book "Same-Old-Same-Old-Blueshirts." Authors; GM Chris Drury and coach Peter (My Second Season Always Is Bad) Laviolette. Their Rangers were outshot 32-24, outhit and failed in the "Giveaway Department," 16-7. Not that it matters today, but last night the Kings blocked 18 shots to eight for the vanquished Visitors. "Time and again, the Rangers prove they cannot beat a quality team," says The Old Scout, "and the Kings have quality." In all fairness to the New Yorkers, the 3-1 loss really was 2-1 except for the very late open-netter. Oh, yeah, J.T. Miller did open the scoring, but the pity of it all is that his goal was also the end of it. Old Scout is talking about four goals for 45 PP attempts in the last 20 games. And if that wasn't cause for concern, the Rangers sense of urgency had all the look of paddling up a lazy river. "Once it was the forte and now the power play has gone down the sewer," adds The Old Scout, "and at the worst time of the year." Now for the good news: 1. All the teams battling for the Wild Card – who played last night – lost. 2. Although L.A.'s Tanner Jeannot tanned Matt Rempe's hide with a one-punch knock-down, The Skating Giraffe was unhurt and would have fought more had the linesman said: "No, no and NO!" 3. The next two foes – Anaheim and San Jose – should produce four points for the Rangers.  (Okay, make that "might." Okay, make that "could.") Get the point; those potential wins could catapult The New York-Close- But-No-Cigars right up in the madcap Wild Card Race. But for now, the Beloved Blueshirts are walking on the shady side of the street. The sign on the lampost says NO WILD CARD AVENUE!

All The Losing Is Getting ‘Tiring’ For The Rangers
The New York Rangers couldn’t salvage an opportunity to gain ground in the playoff picture as they lost 3-1 to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.  Through the first 20 minutes of play, the Kings dominated possession time and the Rangers only recorded two shots, but the score remained 0-0.  J.T. Miller opened up the scoring in the second period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Blueshirts, they did not take advantage of that lead. The Rangers committed three penalties in the second frame, resulting in two goals for Los Angeles.  The Kings won the special teams battle and that’s what ultimately led to the Rangers’ downfall.  Igor Shesterkin displayed yet another valiant effort, recording 30 saves on 32 shots, which is why his teammates feel like they let him down in a way.  “He was spectacular, kept us in the game,” Vincent Trocheck said of Shesterkin. “It almost goes unappreciated since you almost expect every night out of him, but he’s obviously a world-class goalie and shows it night in and night out.” The Rangers feel like they did enough to win the game. However, there’s a sense of frustration with the losses continuing to pile up, especially at this point of the year when every point is critical.  “It gets tiring because I feel like over the last few weeks we’ve been playing some good hockey, but we are still losing,” Mika Zibanejad said. “Find a way to lose. It’s hard to look at the positives.” The Rangers will be back in action on Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks.
