The Rangers went west hoping to land on the sunny side of the street but leave today for Anaheim, back in the shade.
All you need to know about the 3-1 loss to L.A. is from the book "Same-Old-Same-Old-Blueshirts." Authors; GM Chris Drury and coach Peter (My Second Season Always Is Bad) Laviolette.
Their Rangers were outshot 32-24, outhit and failed in the "Giveaway Department," 16-7. Not that it matters today, but last night the Kings blocked 18 shots to eight for the vanquished Visitors.
"Time and again, the Rangers prove they cannot beat a quality team," says The Old Scout, "and the Kings have quality."
In all fairness to the New Yorkers, the 3-1 loss really was 2-1 except for the very late open-netter. Oh, yeah, J.T. Miller did open the scoring, but the pity of it all is that his goal was also the end of it.
Old Scout is talking about four goals for 45 PP attempts in the last 20 games. And if that wasn't cause for concern, the Rangers sense of urgency had all the look of paddling up a lazy river.
"Once it was the forte and now the power play has gone down the sewer," adds The Old Scout, "and at the worst time of the year."
Now for the good news:
1. All the teams battling for the Wild Card – who played last night – lost.
2. Although L.A.'s Tanner Jeannot tanned Matt Rempe's hide with a one-punch knock-down, The Skating Giraffe was unhurt and would have fought more had the linesman said: "No, no and NO!"
3. The next two foes – Anaheim and San Jose – should produce four points for the Rangers. (Okay, make that "might." Okay, make that "could.")
Get the point; those potential wins could catapult The New York-Close- But-No-Cigars right up in the madcap Wild Card Race.
But for now, the Beloved Blueshirts are walking on the shady side of the street. The sign on the lampost says NO WILD CARD AVENUE!
