There are three things to understand about the Rangers at this time that will determine both their immediate and long-term future.
1. INCONSISTENCY: From top to bottom, they must avoid unnecessary dips such as the loss to Pittsburgh and find the tracks that lead to more wins like the one last night in Columbus. (This is not an impossibility.)
2. THE RACE: Simply put, they're not dead. In fact they're relatively close. (It depends on which of your Relatives you believe)
3. THE STARS: For what it's worth Mika Zibanejad is awake and contributing. Breadman Panarin concerns me. Alexis Lafrenière concerns hordes of people. Refreshed J.T. Miller should be the galvanizer. (I hope Adam Fox remembers what the Norris Trophy looks like and means!)
4. THE GOALTENDING: The Maven wonders about Igor Shesterkin's latest injury – serious or not? Whatever the case, Jonathan Quick will do the job with prospect Dylan Garland also available if necessary. I worry more about Igor than Sir Quick. (I look-see at Garland – no relation to Judy – would be nice. (They tell me he's "fighting goalie.")
Let's face it; this team can drive you crazy. For instance, where was Will Cuylle hiding until last night's "Save The Team" performance.
Then Willie comes up with a post-game quote that should shake anyone's head: "We found the desperation we really hadn't had the last couple of games."
(Maven says: Hey, Bud, how come you couldn't find 'desperation' against Pittsburgh? Check the calendar; it's been 'desperation' time for weeks.)
Or, this gem from the beloved coach Peter Laviolette: "After the break we've got to win games."
(Maven says: I've got news for Pistol Pete, before the break you needed – just as well – to win games.")
Bottom Line: They're still alive! The season still is a marathon not a sprint but the sprint is coming up awfully soon!
The Maven believes they'll make the playoffs with a Hair-breath Harry finish.
