Could forward Blake Wheeler actually return for the New York Rangers this postseason? However, Wheeler has been making really positive progress in his recovery as he was able shed his non-contact jersey and practiced in full capacity on Monday morning. Coach Peter Laviolette spoke on Tuesday about the possibility of Wheeler coming back at some point during the playoffs. “He’s full go at practice, but he’s just recently gotten to this point,” Laviolette said. “We want to make sure he’s in a position for success.” While it doesn't seem that the team will rush Wheeler’s return, Laviolette certainly did not rule out the possibility of a comeback to the lineup, which is encouraging for the Rangers. In 54 games this season, the 37-year-old had nine goals, 12 assists and 21 points while also providing a strong veteran presence. In the playoffs, injuries can really occur at any given point, so having Wheeler available could be crucial down the road. He would help balance out the bottom-six and give Laviolette more options to work with if the Rangers are to go on a deep playoff run. Time will only tell to see what ultimately happens with Wheeler, but all signs are pointing in the right direction.
