Then, renowned tv analyst Ray Ferraro chimed in, telling us that what the Blueshirts need is "An Alpha Male." Translated: a Messier-type leader in the lineup. Other hockey forecasters suggest that Vancouver's "Alpha Male" – ex-Ranger J.T. Miller – could be traded to New York for the proper return. Jonathan Toews is talking about a comeback; there's a possible "Alpha" for Lavvy. Who knows? There are a lot of possibilities. One insider tells The Maven that it would be a good idea for GM Chris Drury to inquiry about Mathieu Olivier, the Columbus toughie. You may remember him as the fellow who delivered a major league black eye to Matt Rempe when they fought last season. One thing is certain, the Rangers turbulence is being closely watched by hockey people throughout the continent. Just about every analyst has a theory about what Drury is going to do and how long Peter Laviolette will remain coach. Assuming that I heard ESPN's Emily Kaplan correctly, she indicated that both Drury and Laviolette will retain their positions through the end of the season while a rebuild takes place. Messier's controversial comment about his former club had some outsiders wondering whether Messier might be interested in a front office job. Never happen. Mess had his chance when Glen Sather was orchestrating Rangers moves as MSG boss Jim Dolan's advisor. At the time Messier sought a key role with the team. He allegedly was told that he'd have to do basic training in the minors; as in Hartford. Mark allegedly refused such a bid and that cooled the relationship between Messier and the hockey club to which he brought so much glory. Expect a ton or so more rumors as the week unfolds but – unless Drury is your uncle or best friend – don't believe the loose lips until they are certified by MSG management.
