Zac Jones is making a serious push to make the New York Rangers’ opening night roster. Jones has arguably been the defenseman who’s most stood out for the Rangers through the start of training camp. What's not to like about him? He’s fast, has a rocket of a shot and plays a real flashy offensive game for a blueliner. He put all those skills on display during the Rangers’ 6-4 preseason win as he scored two goals, which brings him closer to earning a roster spot. For Jones, it’s all about proving that he belongs with the big boys. “I knew I just had to come out in the third and make a name for myself and prove to these coaches I could do it night in and night out, so just tried to go out there and play my best,” Jones said. He didn’t just score, but Jones’ goals were highlight-reel type of plays. The first goal came off of a breakaway where he sneaked the puck through the goalie’s five hole while the second came off of a powerful shot from the point. His offensive game is something that could really be of use for the Rangers as aside from Adam Fox, the team doesn't have too many offensively minded defensemen. It’s safe to say, Peter Laviolette was impressed with Jones’ two goals. Zac Jones appears to be a regular in the lineup now that Adam Fox is out. Jones has had a great attitude with everything thus far this season. “That’s his game, to be able to step up and make plays,” Laviolette said. “He got behind everyone on the one (goal) and walked into a bomb on the second one,” Now with Ryan Lindgren out for at least a few weeks, the chances for Jones to make the team are even higher. If he keeps up this impressive play he will not only just make the team, but the young defenseman should be playing a pretty significant role.
