All too often this season, the Ottawa Senators have been on the wrong end of victories like these. But on Monday night, they flipped the script, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Nashville Predators 4-3 in overtime at Canadian Tire Centre.
Claude Giroux scored the winner in the extra frame on a beautiful one-timer from the left faceoff dot. Giroux started the play, sprinting down the left wing with the puck as Jakob Chychrun rushed to the net as a decoy. Giroux gave it to Tim Stutzle, who arrived in the high slot as the trailer. Instead of shooting, Stutzle calmly passed it right back to Giroux, who snapped home the winning goal, sending the home crowd happy.
Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk each had a goal and an assist. Drake Batherson also scored for the Senators, who improved their record to 19-25-2.
Batherson said the group was disappointed after getting "smoked" on Saturday night by the Rangers, and then coming out and falling behind 3-0 in the first period on Monday. But some players stepped up in the dressing room to fire up the troops, including an unlikely source.
"Yeah, Parker Kelly was in there chatting," Batherson said. "And the leaders as well. But Kells made a good speech and got the boys fired up. You love to see it."
Joonas Korpisalo made 18 saves after Ottawa's starting goalie was replaced for the second time in as many games. This time, it Mads Sogaard who was yanked after three goals on 11 shots in the first-period.
The Senators' final game before the all-star break is coming up on Wednesday night in Detroit against the Red Wings.
