Carp's Mason McTavish scored twice for the Ducks who defeated the Senators 5-1.

The Ottawa Senators' four-game winning streak came to a crashing halt on Thursday night with a 5-1 loss to the 30th-place Anaheim Ducks. Ottawa native Mason McTavish scored twice for the Ducks, who needed just 12 shots to build up a 4-0 third-period lead.

As they did in the second half of their win over Columbus on Tuesday night, the Senators looked disjointed in just about every way in this one, and that included goaltending. Joonas Korpisalo allowed five goals on 20 shots.

Pavel Mintyukov got the only goal of the first period. With defenceman Jacob Benard-Docker caught up ice, winger Parker Kelly covered for him but had lost his stick. That led to an Anaheim 3 on 2 (and the stickless Kelly was one of the two), and Mintyukov roared in to bury a rebound.

The Ducks added to their lead with two goals near the end of the second period. With Josh Norris coughing up the puck then taking a bad neutral zone tripping penalty, Anaheim made him pay on the power play, as Frank Vatrano ripped one home to make it 2-0. The Ducks struck again before the end of the period, with McTavish firing a snap shot past Korpisalo, beating him on the short side.

In the third period, Troy Terry took a pass behind the net then took advantage of some laughably flimsy defending from Thomas Chabot. Terry easily walked out through Chabot, then hit McTavish at the opposite post for an easy tap in to make it 4-0.

Ducks starting goalie John Gibson left after 40 minutes after a collision in the second period, replaced by Lukas Dostal. Facing a cold goalie, combined with an early third period goal by Claude Giroux, the Sens briefly had a spring in their step, but the energy quickly fizzled out less than five minutes later. Cam Fowler’s point shot on the power play beat Korpisalo to put the game out of reach.

"I just did think our compete level was high enough," head coach Jacques Martin said. "I give (the Ducks) credit. They outworked us, they were on the puck and we didn't have time and space.

"We had a good stretch going (four game winning streak). We've just gotta regroup. It's not the opposition. We've got to be better. We'll have a meeting and a practice tomorrow and get ready for our next game."

The Senators' next game is on Saturday afternoon at 3pm in Chicago against Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks. Bedard returned to Chicago's lineup on Thursday night.
