The Senators fall four games under 500 with their fourth straight loss and now stand in fourth last place in the NHL.
Stop us if you've heard this one before, but during a game on Sunday night, the Senators fell apart in the second period. The Sens lost 6-3 in Vegas against the Stanley Cup champs.
After taking a 2-1 lead in the first period, the Senators gave up five unanswered goals and watched their record fall to 11-15-0.
Vegas took a 1-0 lead on the game's first shot 97 seconds in, as Jack Eichel ripped a wrist shot on a 2-on-1 past Joonas Korpisalo. Artem Zub had moved up in the offensive zone, and Parker Kelly tried to cover for him at the point but ran into Mark Stone and fell.
The lead didn't last long for Vegas as the Senators tied the game at 1. Josh Norris scored on the power play with a slapshot in the slot. Adin Hill was injured and couldn't get down to make the save. Logan Thompson immediately replaced Hill in the Vegas net.
The Senators' power play wasn't done as Ridly Greig then gave the Senators the lead, firing a wrist shot over Logan Thompson's glove.
The scoring fest continued in the first period as Korpisalo made an absolute mess of a Jonathan Marchessault wrist shot that pulled Vegas even at 2.
The second period was much tighter than the first. The Golden Knights were unable to convert on their two power plays. Korpisalo avenged his poor first period, keeping the Golden Knights at bay despite an onslaught of shots.
Vegas took the lead on the power play as Nicolas Roy caught Ottawa napping at their blue line and walked into a Ben Hutton stretch pass for a breakaway goal.
Moments later, the Senators went on a power play and gave up a back-breaking, shorthanded goal as Vegas doubled their lead to 4-2. Josh Norris fell over in the offensive zone, turning the puck over to Mark Stone for a two-on-one rush with Chandler Stephenson. Stephenson beat Korpisalo, glove-side.
Vegas added insult to injury as Ivan Barbashev scored with 12 seconds left in the second period to make it 5-2 Vegas. A missed Nic Hague shot caromed off the end boards straight to Barbashev, who had a wide-open net.
In the third period, the misery didn't end for the Senators as Vegas scored on another power play via William Karlsson, who neatly finished off a rebound in tight on Korpisalo.
There was an injury scare for Logan Thompson, who kicked his leg out on a tip shot and fell in discomfort. He was able to stay in the game but appeared to be in pain.
Brady Tkachuk cut the lead to 6-3 with only 1:21 left.
The Senators lost their 4th game in a row for the first time all season and now have the fifth-worst record in the NHL. They'll be in Arizona on Tuesday night.
