The Ottawa Senators kicked off a four-game road trip by losing their fourth game in a row, 4-2 Saturday night in Philadelphia. Tyson Foerster scored twice, including once on a penalty shot.
As they have for most of the last two weeks, the Senators came out flat in the first period, giving up a Joel Farabee goal in the first minute, then getting outshot in the period 19-4.
The only reason the Sens were in the game at that point was the work of rookie goalie Mads Sogaard.
Four minutes into the second, Vladimir Tarasenko's soft backhander tied the game at 1. Tarasenko has 17 goals on the season, and as a pending UFA, may be on the trade block.
The score stayed that way until the end of the second period when Tyson Foerster scored twice in the final minutes. The first was a shot from well out that Sogaard was impossibly screened on. Seconds later, Foerster stole the puck from Jakob Chychrun at the Ottawa blue line and was off on a breakaway.
Foerster got a good shot off, but the referee awarded a horribly soft penalty shot after Shane Pinto barely made contact with him. The Flyers forward made no mistake on his freebie, beating Sogaard down low.
Down 3-1, Ottawa's power play got to work after four Flyer stick fouls in the third. On the fourth one, with less than 2 minutes to play, Thomas Chabot finally buried one, a minute or so after he rang a shot off of both posts.
That cut the lead to 3-2 but, despite yet another Chabot one timer off the post in the final minute, that was as close as the Senators would get. The Flyers added an empty netter.
The Senators were without captain Brady Tkachuk and Josh Norris, both out with upper body injuries. While Norris is out long term, Tkachuk made the trip to Philly and was close to playing on Saturday. The Sens had to go with 11 forwards after losing Zack MacEwen early.
Ottawa's top two goalies were also out. Anton Forsberg was hurt during Friday's game while Joonas Korpisalo is sick for a second straight game. Sogaard and Leevi Merilainen held down the fort in their absence.
The Senators' next game is on Wednesday night in Anaheim against the Ducks.
