The battle of Sweden provided one of the crazier games you will ever see Thursday night, as the Ottawa Senators held on to beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in overtime.
The Senators raced out to a 4-0 lead only to blow it within a span of 8:33 in the second period. But Tim Stutzle's buzzer-beating, baseball-swing overtime goal saved the day for the Senators.
The win evens Ottawa's record at 7-7-0 on the season. It's the first time they've had a .500 record since October 28th.
The Senators' 4-0 lead featured two goals from Brady Tkachuk and one apiece for Jake Sanderson and Josh Norris. But then they got sloppy, and the Red Wings roared back in the second period with four unanswered goals from Lucas Raymond, David Perron, Alex DeBrincat, and Shayne Gostisbehere.
The scoring shut down for the third period and most of overtime until Stutzle won the game for the Senators with one of the most unbelievable goals you will ever see. With two seconds left, he swatted a puck out of the air, baseball-style, to salvage the victory.
"I knew we didn't have a lot of time there left," Stutzle told the media. "So, I just tried to get it on the net. It was a great play by Drake to get it to me."
Stutzle spoke about how the Senators who let Detroit back in the game, need to clean up their defensive game.
"We've just got to get better at that," Stutzle said. "We've got to close out games better. I mean, we had a 4-0 lead. We don't need to score more goals. We've just got to play good defensively."
By the Numbers: Brady Tkachuk now has 10 goals. Each time Tkachuk has scored this season, he's had 2 goals in the game, a trend that continued Thursday. Joonas Korpisalo has been playing phenomenal of late for the Senators, with 37 saves on 41 shots on Thursday. Korpisalo has now had a save percentage above .900 in six of his last seven games.
Mathieu Joseph's assist in Thursday's game was his 13th point in 14 games this season. Joseph is already halfway to his career high in points, which is 26. With Jake Sanderson 4th goal of the season, he matched his goal output from last season in only 14 games. He scored 4 goals in 77 games last season.
