Maybe there's still time for that new coach bump after all.

On Wednesday night, the Ottawa Senators overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2. Joonas Korpisalo made 34 saves, and Drake Batherson continued his piping-hot December, scoring twice for the Senators.

The Sens showed some holiday rust in the early going, giving up two goals from Matthew Knies and Tyler Bertuzzi in the first six minutes. Throughout the evening, Toronto had several "how did that not go in?" type chances – a few of them with wide-open nets to shoot at.

Former Sens head coach D.J. Smith would often explain away tough losses by suggesting the Sens "just didn't get the bounces tonight." They got plenty of them on Wednesday at both ends.

The Senators were flat for the first half of the game and fortunate to only be down 2-0 after 30 minutes. But Parker Kelly's shorthanded goal in the second period finally gave them life. Claude Giroux hit Kelly with a perfect backhand saucer pass, and Kelly ripped one in off the post for just his second goal of the year.

Down by one, the club started to push back. Giroux immediately got another shorthanded chance but mishandled the puck at the last second and failed to get a shot.

That's when Batherson and puck luck both went to work. With just over five minutes left in the second period, Tim Stutzle's harmless shot from the left faceoff circle perfectly caromed off Martin Jones right over to Batherson, who tied the game at 2, sliding the puck into the open Leafs' net.

Early in the third, just over nine minutes later, Batherson got his second goal on a circus shot from the corner, down below the Toronto goal line. Batherson banked a shot off the back of Jones' shoulder and, after a brief pause, the puck dropped to the ice behind Jones, just beyond the goal line. It was a fine shot, but also the kind of shot selection that rarely works. It stood up as the game-winner.

Down one, Toronto pulled their goalie with just over three minutes to play, and Brady Tkachuk put the game away with an empty netter, good for his 300th career point.

While it may not qualify yet as a new coach bump, the Senators have now won two games in a row following a six-game losing streak. They'll return home to face the New Jersey Devils on Friday night and Buffalo on Sunday night.
