Formenton is one of five hockey players charged with sexual assault, several months after their 2018 gold medal victory with Canada's World Junior team.
Former Ottawa Senators winger Alex Formenton has apparently walked away from a once promising hockey career at the age of 24.
According to court documents obtained by the CBC, Formenton has "moved on from a hockey career" and now works full time in construction. He's receiving "ongoing training in the operation of heavy equipment as well as the administration aspects of his new trade."
Formenton, Dillon Dubé, Cal Foote, Michael McLeod, and Carter Hart all face sexual assault charges in connection with an alleged group sexual assault of a woman in a player's hotel room following a Hockey Canada gala and golf event in 2018.
Dubé and McLeod now play in the KHL while Hart and Foote continue to train.
Formenton was Ottawa's second-round draft pick in 2017, played 109 games for the club, and was probably the fastest skater in team history. When he became an RFA in 2021, that's right when the headlines began, and that's when he took his career to Switzerland, where he spent the past two seasons.
A judge is now allowing the five players to skip pretrial legal arguments for "compelling economic reasons." Ontario Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas said, "It is clear each of the applicants has a need to work or find work not only to sustain themselves, but to pay their expenses, which at this point include legal fees."
Lawyers have indicated all five players will plead not guilty at their trial, which begins one year from now in September 2025.
