The Senators' salary cap problem clearly wasn't the only reason Pinto remained unsigned.

Ottawa Senators fans have been waiting for weeks to hear some big Shane Pinto news. Pinto has been a restricted free agent since July 1st and has missed the club's first six games.

This isn't exactly what fans had in mind.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Pinto will be suspended by the NHL for violating its gambling rules. An announcement from the league is expected shortly and multiple reports suggest the suspension may be as long as 41 games, with 6 games already served.

Specifics about Pinto's actions are unknown at this point.

Leading up to today's explosive Pinto news, an investigation reportedly began in the summer and eventually led to the pausing of the Senators' negotiations with Pinto.

Pinto remains the NHL's only unsigned 2023 restricted free agent and is the second Senators RFA in as many seasons to be facing off-ice issues (Alex Formenton). It will be interesting to see how the Sens now handle the Pinto situation.

More details to come...
