The Ottawa Senators list of coaching candidates continues to expand. According to Frank Seravalli, they've interviewed New Jersey Devils interim head coach Travis Green.
When the word 'long' is presented with four Os, that's how you know it's a really long list.
Seravalli says Green hasn't been ruled out yet in Jersey but since they're talking to other candidates, they're letting Green do the same.
Green took over the Devils' bench near the end of the season when Lindy Ruff was dismissed. Ruff ended up back in Buffalo a few weeks later. Green hadn't coached since 2021-22 when he was fired by the Vancouver Canucks in his fifth season on the job.
Vancouver missed the playoffs in three of his four full years there and the Canucks were on pace for their worst season under Green before the team replaced him with Bruce Boudreau.
His coaching highlight to date was a Western Hockey League championship as head coach of the Portland Winterhawks. He began that season as an assistant but came in as head coach when Mike Johnston, the coach and GM was suspended for not disclosing financial transactions to the league.
As a player, Green played over 900 games in the league, but Senators fans mostly remember his brief time with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the early 2000s, when his often chippy play got under Ottawa's skin during the Battle of Ontario.
With the Senators' new management big on due diligence and vowing to be best in class, they'll probably at least have a conversation with all of the coaches who have very recent NHL experience. That includes Craig Berube, Dean Evason, Todd McLellan, and Jay Woodcroft, not to mention coaches who were fired after the season like Don Granato, David Quinn or Dave Hakstol.
