Jensen is the stay-at-home right-shot defenceman the Senators have been looking for to rebalance their blue line.
As with Alex DeBrincat the summer before, Jakob Chychrun was here for a good time, not a long time.
The Senators have traded Chychrun to the Washington Capitals for defenceman Nick Jensen and a third-rounder.
The tale of the tape on Jensen: At 33, he's the veteran right shot D they've coveted for some time. He's 6-foot-1, 196 pounds and under contract for the next two years at a cap hit of $4.05 million, a savings of just over half a million on Chychrun.
Jense had 14 points in 78 games last season but had 29 the season before. But here's not here to provide offence.
Jensen is a true defensive defenceman who will complement either Jake Sanderson or Thomas Chabot, minding the store while they go off and create. He's physical, reliable, blocks shots, and takes away opponents' time and space.
Jensen suffered a scary injury in April after his head collided with the boards in a game against Tampa. He was stretchered off, but apparently, that injury is behind him now.
The fact that absolutely no one was talking about Jensen certainly speaks to the new era of keeping information locked up in Ottawa.
When asked at the end of the season whether Ottawa was a place he wanted to play for the next few years, Chychrun claimed he hadn't thought about it.
"It's a tough question," Chychrun said after an exhale. "I mean, I don't know. I honestly have not thought about that. I know I have one more year left and like I said, there haven't even been talks of an extension or anything. So I haven't really gotten my head wrapped around that idea. So it's tough for me to sit here and act like I have. I don't know. I'm just going to kind of take it day-by-day and see if and when we have those talks and go from there."
Apparently, those talks either never happened or went nowhere...
More to come...
