According to Frank Seravalli at Daily Faceoff, Pierre Dorion has been fired as general manager of the Ottawa Senators.
Dorion was the main architect of Ottawa's rebuild that began around the time of the 2018 trade of Erik Karlsson to San Jose. But the rebuild has been slow, with the Senators missing the playoffs for six straight seasons.
Dorion has assembled some nice pieces in Ottawa and better days are ahead. But regrets? He's had a few.
And when Michael Andlauer officially took over as owner last month, he immediately brought in his people to fully evaluate the job performances of existing employees.
Cyril Leeder was able to give Andlauer a historical perspective on what's gone on here during Dorion's tenure. Steve Staios was able to bring a fresh set of eyes to the situation. Discussions were held inside and outside of the organization.
Today's news is a clear indicator that Dorion's performance reviews haven't been strong. And the final straw may have been Wednesday's loss of a first-round draft pick as a penalty for the club's mishandling of the Evgenii Dadonov deal in 2021.
Dorion joined the Sens as a scout in 2007 and moved up the ranks until he took over for Bryan Murray as GM in 2016.
The Sens have a news conference planned for 3:15 this afternoon. The Hockey News Ottawa will update with further details shortly.
