Jakob Chychrun scored twice, including the overtime winner, as the Senators defeated Toronto 4-3 in overtime.

The Ottawa Senators 2023 preseason is off to a fine start. The Sens posted their second win in as many days over the Toronto Maple Leafs – this time a 4-3 overtime win in Toronto.

After Ottawa's sluggish third period and Mitch Marner's equalizer in the dying seconds, Jakob Chychrun ended things with his second goal of the night, burying a rebound off a 2 on 1. Ridly Greig took a low shot that caromed perfectly off goalie Martin Jones, leaving Chychrun with a wide-open net.

For Greig, it was redemption for a bad penalty 130 feet away from Ottawa's net with just 24 seconds left in the game. The Leafs, who had the league's third best power play last season, tied the game with six seconds remaining.

While both players played about half the game, Chychrun outperformed Thomas Chabot, his D partner for the night. It's only preseason, but if you didn't know better, you'd swear that Chychrun was the team's $8 million dollar defenceman and Chabot was the guy who plays for roughly half of that sum.

In the first period, it looked like it was going to be a "last goal wins" kind of game. The Sens emerged from the opening frame with a 3-2 lead, but there was no more scoring after that until the Marner goal. And much of the credit for that goes to Sogaard, who made 36 saves on the night, including Easton Cowan's penalty shot.

Dominik Kubalik and Roby Jarventie looked strong together in the first, helping the Sens to an early 2-0 lead. Kubalik had two points on the night.

Other notes:

  • The Senators became more passive as the evening went on, allowing the Leafs long stretches of offensive zone possession.
  • Cole Reinhardt, Angus Crookshank and Mathieu Joseph all skated their tails off and created some good offensive chances for themselves.
  • It looks odd to see former Senator head coach Guy Boucher patrolling Toronto's bench.
  • Vladimir Tarasenko couldn't be described as having much of an impact on the game but he was out there to begin the 3 on 3 overtime with Chabot and Drake Batherson.
  • The Senators' penalty kill needs a little more work on preventing that lethal bump pass to the slot, which gave them trouble tonight.

Ottawa's roster Monday night:

The Senators will shuffle the deck again, and be in Montreal Wednesday night.
