Let's get one thing clear right off the bat: Oliver Bonk is a defenseman. He was drafted by the Flyers (22nd overall) for his physicality, ability to move the puck, and overall consistent playing style. He wasn't exactly channelling his inner Cam York by racking up the points in addition to his defensive game—he scored 10 goals for the OHL's London Knights last season, but didn't find the back of the net in the final 21 games of the season or during the Knights' playoff run.

However, something shifted in November 2023. Knights head coach Dale Hunter moved Bonk to the bumper position of the power play. Shortly thereafter, Bonk ended an eye-watering 57-game goal drought with a power play goal in the Knights' 10-7 victory over the Windsor Spitfires. Before, the back of the net was elusive. Now, it seems like Bonk couldn't stop scoring if you paid him.

In the 38 games he's played so far this season, he's recorded 52 points (17 goals, 35 assists). A large majority of those goals (12 to be exact) have come on the power play. In January alone, Bonk has 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 10 games—making him a pretty good choice for the OHL's 'Defenceman of the Month' honor.

At just 19 years old, it could still be a while before fans see Bonk in a Flyers jersey, but he's one of the organization's most exciting and anticipated prospects (especially considering what he's shown he can bring to the power play). Before you know it, "Bumper Bonk" could be coming to an NHL blue line near you!
