The Philadelphia Flyers truly are launching a "New Era of Orange."
Literally.
Tuesday morning, the Flyers unveiled new uniforms to be debuted at the start of the 2023-24 season, marking the first alterations made to their primary home and away sweaters since 2010.
The new uniforms will feature the classic burnt orange the club donned throughout '80s and '90s, worn by the likes of Eric Lindros, Rod Brind'Amour, and many other franchise legends.
The Flyers' iconic "flying P" logo will remain unchanged.
"These burnt orange sweaters are one of the most iconic symbols of Flyers hockey," Flyers president of hockey operations Keith Jones said in a statement released by the team. "There's no doubt that this look is known throughout the NHL and uniquely beloved by our fans because it brings to life one of the most important parts of our rebuild — it honors our past while we continue to forge a new path forward."
The burnt orange is just one of many elements of the Flyers' new uniforms that honor sweaters worn throughout the club's history. For one, the sleeve stripes are much thicker than the ones featured on their previous duds, which more closely resembles their look from the '80s and '90s. The sleeve numbers have also shifted to a single-color design, which harkens back to the Flyers' original uniforms from the '60s.
The colored nameplates, which have been included on Flyers sweaters since 2008, will return. Meanwhile, the black horizontal stripe along the bottom of the sweater featured on the Flyers' threads throughout the '80s and '90s will be making a comeback.
The new sweaters will also feature a completely new element — a jersey ad.
Along with the new uniforms, the Flyers unveiled Independence Blue Cross as the first-ever home jersey patch partner in team history. The Independence Blue Cross logo will be featured on the right side of the chest area on home sweaters and the third alternate jersey as part of a multi-year deal.
"Independence Blue Cross is excited about this opportunity to highlight our ongoing support for the Philadelphia Flyers in such a visible way," said Independence Blue Cross president and CEO Gregory E. Deavens.
"We are proud of our Philadelphia roots and our service to Southeastern Pennsylvania over the past 85 years. As the hometown health insurer, we are delighted to support the traditions that mean so much to our community, including deepening our relationship with our region's legendary hometown hockey team."
The start of the Flyers' new era will look a whole lot different, both philosophically and aesthetically. After failing to qualify for the playoffs in three straight seasons, the club has already made sweeping changes throughout the organization, and these new uniforms serve as the latest (and perhaps most noticeable) modification.
