Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports - Former Flyers defenseman Tony DeAngelo signs with Hurricanes

Tony DeAngelo is headed to the Carolina Hurricanes after all.

The former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman signed a one-year contract with the Hurricanes Monday afternoon, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. His contract is reportedly worth around $1.6 million.

DeAngelo spent the 2021-22 season with the Hurricanes. In 64 games, he posted 10 goals and 51 points.

Earlier this month, the Flyers placed DeAngelo on unconditional waivers for purposes of a buyout, making him the first player in NHL history to be bought out multiple times. DeAngelo had one year remaining on his contract, which carried an annual cap hit of $5 million.

With DeAngelo bought out, the Flyers will owe $1,666,667 in dead cap space for the next two seasons.

Before placing him on waivers, it was reported the Flyers had a deal in place to trade DeAngelo to the Hurricanes. However, that trade was nixed due to cap circumvention purposes — the Hurricanes traded DeAngelo to the Flyers last summer, and reacquiring a player less than a year after trading them away is evidently a big no-no according to the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.

DeAngelo's one season in Philadelphia was nothing short of a colossal failure. While he logged a respectable 42 points in 70 games, he also struggled mightily defensively and was unable to develop a healthy relationship with Flyers head coach John Tortorella. Tortorella benched DeAngelo for the Flyers' final five games of the season, and at that point, it became clear the South Jersey native's days in Philadelphia were numbered.

The Flyers gave up a 2022 fourth-round pick, a 2023 third-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick for DeAngelo in their trade with the Hurricanes last July.
