Ersson will be the Flyers' No. 2 goalie behind Carter Hart to start the regular season.

One of the top storylines throughout Philadelphia Flyers training camp was the three-way battle taking place between Sam Ersson, Felix Sandstrom and Cal Petersen for the backup goalie job behind Carter Hart.

Wednesday afternoon, Flyers head coach John Tortorella revealed the winner of the battle.

Ersson will be the No. 2 netminder for the season opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 12.

"Hart is our guy, Ersson's backing him up. That's where we're at," Tortorella told the media.

"The mandate to (goaltending coach Kim Dillabaugh) is get our 1 and 2 ready to go for opening night. And that'll be Hartsy and Erss."

Ersson's promotion to the NHL was well-earned. He made 33 saves on 37 shots in his three preseason appearances and outperformed Petersen and Sandstrom for much of training camp.

Sandstrom, who served as the Flyers' primary backup during the 2022-23 campaign, remains on the training camp roster. He will likely be placed on waivers for purposes of joining the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the coming days. Sandstrom is not waiver exempt, so it is possible he could be claimed by another team in search of goalie depth.

Petersen was placed on waivers Tuesday, but went unclaimed — not surprising given his hefty $5 million cap hit.

Ersson, 23, was solid in his 12 games of action with the Flyers last season. He became just the 12th goaltender in NHL history to win each of his first six decisions, though he did lose the final three starts of his stay with the Flyers before being sent down to Lehigh Valley to finish the campaign.

With the Phantoms, he logged a 24-17-1 record along with a .900 save percentage and 2.84 goals against average through 42 outings.
