The Pittsburgh Penguins had five players clear waivers as team's solidify opening rosters.
The NHL season kicks off in 24 hours, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are finalizing their opening roster. Five Penguins cleared waivers ahead of the annual roster deadline at 5 p.m. Eastern.
Yesterday, the Penguins placed forwards Radim Zohorna, Vinnie Hinostroza and, Colin White, as well as defenseman Mark Friedman and goaltender Magnus Hellberg on waivers. As of 2 p.m. Eastern, all five passed through waivers and are eligible to be sent to the AHL Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.
Zohorna, White, and Hinostroza had been fighting for the Penguins' 13th available forward spot on the roster throughout training camp and became the last men standing by the final weekend of the preseason. With all three passing through waivers, two will be assigned to the AHL, with the other making the opening night roster.
As Penguins President of Hockey Ops and General Manager Kyle Dubas alluded to earlier today, the Penguins will continue to evaluate their roster throughout the season and recall players if those on the NHL roster are "ineffective."
Dubas stated that the Penguins expect to begin the season with 22 players on the NHL roster. They have until 5 p.m. Eastern to get there.
