Matt Murray set himself apart as an elite talent with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but things haven't been the same recently.
As a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, goalie Matt Murray quickly made a name for himself backstopping the team to a pair of Stanley Cup runs.
Ever since departing the Penguins organization, however, Murray has struggled to reclaim the same kind of luster.
After dealing with injuries for much of the 2022-23 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that Murray will be out the next six to eight months.
The Maple Leafs stated that Murray underwent bilateral hip surgery, and that should keep him out for the entirety of the 2023-24 season.
Murray joined the Maple Leafs organization ahead of the 2022-23 season and appeared in only 26 games.
In that time, Murray put up a 14-8-2 record with a .903 save percentage and 3.01 goals against average.
Not long ago, the Maple Leafs announced that Murray would start the year on season opening long-term injured reserve, and it wasn’t immediately clear why.
Murray said during the playoffs that he was ready to play if the team needed him.
The two-time Cup champion has one year left on his contract that earns him $6.25 million; the Maple Leafs got him on retained salary and only have him at a $4,687,500 against the salary cap.
