Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin might be heated rivals on the ice, but away from the rink, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals captains are pretty friendly.
With the game’s best players in Southern Florida for the NHL All-Star game there has already been quite the buzz around the Penguins captain and his involvement with multiple players.
According to the NHL, Crosby is set to participate in multiple Skills Competition challenges alongside not only a rival in Ovechkin, but also his good friend, Nathan MacKinnon.
Ovechkin spoke with media to kick off the All-Star weekend, and he detailed the relationship between himself and Crosby.
“He still enjoys playing hockey, I still enjoy playing hockey,” Ovechkin said. “I’m sure when me and him retire we’re just going to have a couple of beers together.”
Imagine being the bartender in that scenario; Crosby and Ovechkin have been linked and pitted against each other ever since 2005, and surely, they’ve got some stories to tell.
More than just rivals, the two have been nearly identical in career point totals over the last couple of seasons.
While Ovechkin hunts down the all-time goal scoring record, he has hit 1,464 career points in 1,326 games; in over 200 fewer games, Crosby sits at 1,469 points.
Ovechkin noted that he and Crosby have become friends as they’ve matured through the years, occasionally calling and texting each other.
When asked about what he thinks of their rivalry, Ovechkin was complimentary of what those two and their teams have brought to the game.
“I think it’s great for hockey,” Ovechkin said. “For generations to see that kind of comparison. That kind of battle between the two of us, the two organizations.”
Crosby and Ovechkin will be paired together for the Breakaway Challenge at the NHL Skills Competition and that will surely be a memorable moment for their legacy and rivalry.
