An all-time NHL record held by the Pittsburgh Penguins is being threatened by the Edmonton Oilers.

Goaltending will play a bigger role than the power play for the Pittsburgh Penguins down the stretch of this season.

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins won the franchise’s only President’s Trophy with a 56-21-7 record in 1992-93. To cap off their season, the Penguins went on a run of 17 consecutive wins, setting a new NHL record. Those 17 straight wins have held strong ever since, but a team is vying to surpass the Penguins’ all-time mark.

With a win over the Nashville Predators, the Edmonton Oilers sealed their 16th consecutive victory. Following a slow start to the 2023-24 season, this streak has helped the Oilers sit right back in a comfortable playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Ever since being drafted first overall in 2015, Connor McDavid has been the leader of the Oilers, and his nineth season has been no different.

Over the course of the 16-game winning streak, McDavid has scored a ridiculous nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points. McDavid’s right-hand man Leon Draisaitl has been just as impressive with 23 points (10G-13A) in 16 games.

The Oilers started the season just about as poor as one could imagine with a 5-12-1 start. They fired their coach Jay Woodcroft after starting the year 3-9-1. Since the firing, the Oilers have gone 25-6-0 under Kris Knoblauch.

The Oilers enter their bye week and the All-Star break just one game back of tying the Penguins and NHL’s consecutive wins streak. They’ll have a tough return to the ice against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights. Following that on what could be a record setting night, the Oilers take on a struggling Anaheim Ducks.
