FSG might have more than just hockey names on their list of Pittsburgh Penguins GM candidates.

With Fenway Sports Group properly casting a ‘wide net’ in searching for a new general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins, there may be more possibilities than expected.

While the list of names will grow in the Penguins’ GM search, it’s likely that FSG will look outside of hockey.

On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, and in a written rundown, Elliotte Friedman brought up the name Jeff Greenberg.

Prior to the 2022-23 season, Greenberg joined the Chicago Blackhawks as an associate general manager, but he cut his teeth in the Chicago Cubs front office for 11 years.

During his time with the Cubs, Greenberg held a number of different positions from director of pro scouting to assistant GM.

Greenberg played a big role in building the 2016 Cubs that won their first World Series in 108 years.

Before the Blackhawks hired Kyle Davidson to be their general manager, Greenberg was among the names interviewed for the position.

After a year of learning the craft with the Blackhawks, Greenberg could be looking for a higher role in the NHL.

Friedman also states that there is an extra connection between Greenberg and FSG; Theo Epstein has high praise for Greenberg.

Epstein was the general manager for the Boston Red Sox and won multiple World Series’ Titles under FSG ownership.

That’s no small push, and if the list of the candidates is as big as expected, Greenberg might be in contention.

Greenberg is a Pittsburgh-native who grew up playing hockey in the area and has worked with a professional sports team in the city before.

Before his time with the Cubs, Greenberg worked in labor relations with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
