Lost in the headlines for the Winnipeg Jets Friday was the placement of an ex-Penguin on the waiver wire.
The Pittsburgh Penguins reshaped their blue line this summer, making a few moves to give the defense corps an entirely new look.
And one of the casualties of that reshaping became a bit of a casualty with his new team, too.
On Friday, the Winnipeg Jets placed former Penguins' defenseman Jack St. Ivany on waivers. The 6-foot-4, 197-pound blueliner was dealt to the Jets this summer in exchange for forward David Gustafsson, who is currently playing for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (WBS) Penguins, Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate.
In four games with Winnipeg this season, St. Ivany has no points, is a minus-1, and has averaged 13:31 of ice time per game.
St. Ivany, 27, was a fourth-round pick (112th overall) of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2018. He signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent in the summer of 2022, and his play for WBS that season and in his 14 NHL games during the 2023-24 season - particularly, on the defensive side of the puck - earned him a three-year contract worth $850,000 annually with Pittsburgh.
The next two seasons didn't fare quite as well for St. Ivany at the NHL level, and as a result, he was between the NHL and AHL levels from 2024-2026 before he was traded to Winnipeg. In 57 career NHL games, St. Ivany has amassed nine assists.
The Jets also traded superstar netminder Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils Friday for a return involving forward Dawson Mercer and 2026 first-round pick Alexander Command.
