PITTSBURGH – The Stanley Cup Playoffs are rolling along, and for the second straight year, the Pittsburgh Penguins are not participating. While fans in Pittsburgh won’t see their team compete, plenty of former Penguins are in the running.

Not only are there well over 10 former Penguins still alive in the playoffs, but some have great odds of winning the Stanley Cup. According to BetMGM, the Carolina Hurricanes (+400), Edmonton Oilers (+450), and Florida Panthers (+500) have the three highest odds, and there are former Penguins on each of those squads.

The Hurricanes have the most former Penguins of this group, with three and arguably the most relevant names. Jordan Staal and Jake Guentzel both previously won the Cup with the Penguins in 2009 and 2017, respectively, and are looking for their second ring. Stefan Noesen rounds out the trio as a member of the Penguins for six games during the 2019-20 season.

Ready to kick off their second-round matchup with the New York Rangers, the Hurricanes will rely on Staal and Guentzel in two very different aspects of the game. Staal’s defensive acumen earned him his second Selke Trophy nomination, while Guentzel will look to continue contributing on the score sheet.

The Penguins would also benefit if the Hurricanes reached the Stanley Cup Final. If the Hurricanes can secure the Eastern Conference Championship, a condition will be met in the Guentzel trade.

A second-round pick will be elevated to a first if the Hurricanes reach the Stanley Cup Final.

The Oilers have a ton of offensive firepower in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but a piece of their blue line former suited up with the Penguins. Cody Ceci spent the 2020-21 season with the Penguins and earned a four-year deal with the Oilers.

Ceci played in all five games of the Oilers’ opening-round win over the Los Angeles Kings, recording one assist. It will be Ceci's first championship if the Oilers break through and end their 34-year Cup drought.

The Panthers made the Stanley Cup Final last year but didn’t have Evan Rodrigues or Dmitry Kulikov on their roster. Rodrigues spent parts of three seasons with the Penguins before departing after the 2022-23 season. Kulikov was only briefly part of the Penguins blue line, playing six games after last season’s trade deadline.

Both Rodrigues and Kulikov are hunting for not only their first Cup win but also the first championship in the Panthers’ franchise history.
