PITTSBURGH – Even though the trade deadline has passed, teams are still allowed to make moves, and that includes involving a former top prospect of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Nathan Legare was expected to be a high-level goal scorer for the Penguins, but things never panned out with the organization.

The Penguins dealt Legare to the Montreal Canadiens organization as part of the three-way deal that landed Erik Karlsson in Pittsburgh. A few days after the trade deadline, the Canadiens organization moved on from Legare.

Canadiens American Hockey League affiliate, the Laval Rocket, has traded Legare to the New Jersey Devils organization in exchange for Arnaud Durandeau. The Devils have stated Legare will report to their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets.

Legare had an extremely high ceiling when he was taken in the third round of the 2019 NHL Draft. A lot of his scoring prowess has faded since kicking off his professional hockey career. In 125 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Legare only scored 15 goals.

In 39 this season with the Rocket, he’s only picked up six goals and three assists for nine total points. Dreams of the NHL seem further away than ever for the still young forward, but anything is possible.

Legare will likely not see NHL time this season as players traded after the deadline are not eligible to participate in the postseason, and the Devils are still shooting for a spot in the playoffs.
