There is plenty of Pittsburgh Penguins representation at the IIHF World Championship.

There is plenty of Pittsburgh Penguins representation at the IIHF World Championship.

PITTSBURGH – The 2024 IIHF World Championship features nine players currently playing within the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. Those faces are spread between six teams, and some have already started to put up good numbers at the tournament.

Each country has played two games of the tournament, and three Penguins already have three points to their ledger. Michael Bunting with Team Canada and Jesse Puljujarvi with Finland sit with a goal and two assists, while Erik Karlsson on Team Sweden has a pair of goals with an assist.

Bunting has been playing alongside rookie sensation Connor Bedard, who is already showing up at the tournament. Bedard has scored four goals in the tournament already, with Bunting assisting on two of them.

Bunting has a goal of his own, and it didn’t come from his usual spot. In Canada’s first game, while trailing Great Britain, Bunting took a shot from just below the blue line that beat everyone to find the back of the net.

Penguins forward Puljujarvi also did his damage against Great Britain. All three of Puljujarvi’s points came in Finland’s 8-0 win to even their record to 1-1. One of Puljujarvi’s assists came on a goal from former Penguins defender Juusu Riikola.

Karlsson was quiet during Sweden’s first game of the tournament against the United States but turned things on against Poland. Karlsson showed his offensive skill with two goals, one with a huge slap shot and another on the power play in the game’s closing minutes.

Sweden and Canada have started the tournament a perfect 2-0 and look like early favorites to take the gold medal. If the Penguins representation can keep up the solid work, there should be plenty of good hockey to be seen.
